Summer FUN, FOOD and FRIENDS

Welcome back to YOUR TimeBank!  This Summer is shaping up to be a great one.  The community garden is in full swing and members are reaching out to one another for help with a myriad of tasks and activities.  Since January of this year, members have exchanged 1,279.75 hours for things like:

- Electrical work
- Plumbing
- Painting
- Conducting a Yoga Class for Other Members
- Sharpening Knives
- Helping at TimeBank events
- Attending TimeBank events
- Working in the Community garden
- Sewing
- Transportation
- Weatherization/Energy Audits
- Supervising Interns
- Helping with Disability Applications
- Bike repair
- Carpentry

Remember to log in to hOurworld and see what YOU can exchange today!  You can also exchange with other TimeBanks across the world.  Going on a trip to the UK?  Check out offers in their TimeBank before you go!  Just heading south for a vacation?  There are TimeBanks all across the United States and your membership allows you to exchange with all of them utilizing the hOurworld system.

What We Are Doing Next

Great opportunities to engage with fellow TimeBankers and exchange hours are coming up!

Community Garden (ongoing):  The Community Garden is available for you and your family to utilize.  If you don't have the time to manage your own garden, you can put in a few hours watering or weeding the community garden and reap the vegetables!  If you volunteer for a community based agency, you can earn produce to donate, even if you won't use the food yourself.  If you have gardening experience to share, we would love to have your knowledge at the garden as well.  Contact Rachel Reyst-Carroll to be added to the Garden Communication list or log in to hOurworld and join the Garden "group" in the groups tab to be kept in the loop on Garden work days.

Orientation and Training -
June 12th and June 14th
Do you want to know more about how to look up offers and requests from other TimeBanks or how to log your hours?  Have you had problems logging in and need some assistance?  Maybe you just have some questions to ask or would like to meet up with other TimeBankers to learn more about what we are up to.  If any of these things sound like something you need or want, please join us for an orientation and computer training session at Nancy's house on Friday June 12th at 10am or on Sunday June 14th at 1pm.  Everyone is welcome, even if you don't have or use a computer.  If you need to find a buddy to log your hours for you, please join us!  Contact Nancy at 248-435-6511 or nchinn7@comcast.net to let her know you plan to be there.

Annual Meeting - July 12thJoin us for an annual meeting at Nancy and Vic's home.  We will go over the events of the last year while you enjoy time by the pool with friends and good food.  This is a great opportunity to network and scope out some new exchanges for yourself.

Items of Interest for YOU to Know

  • We want to hear from YOU and how the TimeBank has benefited your life!  Send in a picture and a description of a recent exchange you have completed for our newsletter and receive .5 hours for your trouble.
  • One of our founding cabinet members, Miriam Nemeth, is moving to Washington D.C. next month.  We are grateful for her guidance and support and will be sad to see her go.   Make sure to wish her well the next time you see her.
  • SAVE the DATE!  The 2nd Annual Bid to Build Our Communities Auction which benefits local TimeBanks in Michigan like ours is coming up on October 10th, 2015.   We need your help volunteering at the auction or donating items.  Please contact Nancy Chinn or Rachel Reyst-Carroll if you can assist!  Last year's auction earned us over $400 and got our name out in the community.  Thank you to everyone who helped.  We look forward to your help again this year!
  • Please extend your condolences to Ann Cline, as her mother passed away recently.  Ann has been a member of the Royal Oak - Huntington Woods TimeBank since 2011 and has been an asset to us all.  The TimeBank Cabinet sincerely offers any support to Ann and her family that she may need at this time and we hope that all of our members will as well.

October Newsletter (2014)

October Fun

The Royal Oak - Huntington Woods TimeBank participated in the organization of the first annual Auction fundraiser at the Royal Oak Women's Club on Saturday the 18th of October.  Our TimeBank made a great showing at the auction and a hearty thank you goes out to all of the members who came out to support the MI Alliance of TimeBanks and the local TimeBanks at this auction.  Our TimeBank will make 50% of the proceeds from items that our members donated at the event.  We will keep you posted on how much we earned from this fundraiser once the numbers are tallied.  Even though our TimeBank runs primarily from exchanges made between members, we won't be able to move to the next level of viability until we can earn enough from fundraisers and dues to support a paid staff member.  In the meantime, our success relies upon all of the truly dedicated members of our TimeBank that share their talents with each other.  Post what you are good at and don't hesitate to call a member if you need immediate assistance with anything.  Sometimes a phone is quicker and more effective than an email.  If you need help logging into hOurworld online to get a list of members names and contact information, let Rachel Reyst-Carroll know and she can set up an appointment to help!

What We Are Doing Next

Great opportunities to engage with fellow TimeBankers and exchange hours are coming up!

October 24th 5pm to 9pm - Halloween at the "Y":  Join us at the South Oakland YMCA for the annual Halloween Party.  The TimeBank has traditionally had a large turnout of members to assist with running the games, passing out candy and painting faces.  Last year we also had a member help out greatly in the haunted house with real props!  Contact Lisa at the YMCA if you would like to help out and she can sign you up for a task!

November 14th - Chili Cook Off:  The temperature will be dropping but things will be heating up at the 2nd annual Chili Cook off at Jen's house.  Whip up your best batch of Chili and see if you can take the grand prize and championship from Tom G.  Look for a sign up email to come around as we get closer to the date.  Children are welcome to attend with their families and there will be activities for them as well.

December 12th - Cookie Exchange:  Last year's cookie exchange was a smashing success!  Bring one type of cookie and leave with tons of different types.  This event will be at Jen's house and will be kid friendly.  Look for a sign up sheet to be emailed out as we approach the date.

Items of Interest for YOU to Know

  • Due to unforeseen member needs at the YMCA, they are no longer able to extend classes to TimeBank members or use of open swim time.  You can still use your Time Dollars to rent space at the YMCA so keep that in mind for your next party or event.
  • You can now offer and request exchanges GLOBALLY through the hOurworld software online!  If you don't want to go global at this time, you simply do nothing and everything will stay as it was.  Your information will not be shared with anyone outside of our local timebank.  In the event you would like to start offering and requesting exchanges outside of Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, you can make any offer "Global" by clicking on the earth icon when you create the offer or request.  If you would like to learn more, contact Rachel Reyst-Carroll to set up a time for an orientation.  This is a great opportunity for us to exchange with other timebanks in Michigan and to see what TimeBanks are offering in other states or other countries.  If you have any questions, let us know!

"Fall" - Into Your Community

I hope that everyone had a great summer!  Now that we are back from our vacations and outdoor adventures, it is time to settle into the routine of normal life.  The air is getting more chill and it is time to connect with our neighbors.  Thank you to all of our TimeBank members who came out to the Annual Meeting and enjoyed the pool at Nancy and Vic's home one last time.  We also successfully made a showing at the Green Cruise in Ferndale to showcase TimeBanking's part in sustainable and local living.  Our Community Garden culminated in an excellent "Taste of the Garden" picnic this month which showcased dishes made from our garden goodies and the cutting of the watermelon in the garden.   This garden is an excellent resource for our families and our neighbors, we hope to have even more people in the garden next year.

Summer Fun

The TimeBank participated in the Huntington Wood Fourth of July Parade again this year.  If you didn't make it to the parade, you missed a great time.  An orientation followed at the Huntington Woods Library on the 8th of July and we welcomed a new member!  The next orientation is coming up in September so keep an eye open for the date.  Over the last month the Community Garden has grown quite a bit and members have been coming out to weed, water and harvest.  If you haven't had a chance to participate in the garden and would like to, contact Suzanne so that you can be added to email list.

What We Did Last Month

The June Picnic was cozy under the pavilion at the Starr Jaycee Park on June 8th.  Outside of the Pavilion was RAIN though.  We anticipated getting the word out to all of the people at the park riding the train, but the train did not run that day.  Regardless, we had 20 great TimeBank members show up and another potential TimeBank member who wanted to learn more about what we do.  Thank you to all of members who came out to say hi and enjoy a hotdog.  The Community Garden has also been underway and we now have tons of sprouts and towering Arugula plants.  All of this rain will surely help the garden grow so come out and help when you can so that you can benefit from this great organic produce.  The summer is officially starting this Weekend! Great opportunities for members to participate in events are upon us.  Keep your eyes open for new posts from the YMCA about classes and benefits you can use your time dollars for.

July 27th - Annual Meeting:  Join us at our annual meeting!  The meeting is at Nancy and Vic's home, which means you can bring the family and take a dip in the pool while you are there.  Bring a pot-luck dish and your bathing suits/towels.  We will go over the timebank's accomplishments for the year and will enjoy some fun, food and fellowship.  The meeting will be from 2pm to 5pm.  Let Nancy know if you can make it!
