2014 RO HW TimeBank Community Garden Information
Hello everyone,
We hope you are enjoying watching winter fade away, and are ready to get out and garden with us soon at the Royal Oak/Huntington Woods TimeBank Garden!
As many of you know, last year was the first year of the garden when the raised beds where built, and we learned a lot about community gardening. This year, the garden committee has been researching how to structure and run a community garden, and we have a few things to roll out to you all regarding how the garden will work this year. Here are the details:
Method of Communication:
Please accept this invitation to join the Royal Oak/Huntington Woods TimeBank Garden Google Group. This is the method we will be using to communicate with everyone.
Membership Requirements:
To join the TimeBank garden, you must first join the Royal Oak/Huntington Woods TimeBank, or if you are already a member, your dues must be current. The link for joining is http://www.royaloakhuntingtonwoodstimebank.org/join.html. Or you may sign up at the upcoming Garden Kick-Off Meeting and Garden Tour (see below.)
Garden Specific Financial Contribution:
To cover garden expenses, specifically water, we are asking for a donation of $15 per each individual, or $20 per household. Your donation does not buy you produce; you’ll earn produce with the hours that you work in the garden. If this is a hardship for you, please email Suzanne at zan248@comcast.net, and we will discretely find a non financial way to meet your donation.
Time Commitment:
In order to make this a successful, productive garden, we need everyone to commit to coming out and helping with the garden! While there is no required number of hours, we are asking that you try to participate as often as possible. When the harvest starts, as long as it is a decent growing season, you should be taking home loads of veggies each week, so your time commitment will be well worth it! The more hours you put in to the garden, the more vegetables you’ll be taking home. Regular weekly work days will be scheduled.
Tracking Hours:
All hours that you work in the garden are to be recorded on the TimeBank hours tracking tool. You will be able to cash these hours in for harvest as the vegetables start coming in. We will provide direction and/or assistance on learning the hours tracking tool. It is easy to use.
Garden Kick-Off Meeting and Garden Tour
Please join us on Sunday, April 13th at 2 p.m. at 12935 Victoria, Huntington Woods for our Garden Kick-Off Meeting and Garden Tour. Our meeting agenda will include explaining our structure, recruiting people to head committees, signing up for the TimeBank, collecting donations, and touring the garden.
First Work Day
Our first work day will be Saturday, April 19th at 2pm. We know that is Easter weekend, so hopefully you can still join us if possible. We didn't want to wait another week out, because we felt that's too getting too late into April.
Benefits of Joining:
There are so many benefits of joining the TimeBank Garden! These include: getting to know your fellow community members better, learning new things about vegetable gardening, and/or sharing the knowledge you have, the enjoyment of being outdoors and growing something living, and the best part, fresh, home-grown, local vegetables!
Thanks to everyone, we hope to see you on Sunday the 13th!
Your Garden Committee,
Wendy Appleton
Theresa Erickson
Sally Palaian
